Week 1 – MSHS Football vs. Morton – By the Numbers

The Bulldogs’ season opener against Morton featured a record-breaking offensive display, with Lucas Dyer passing for 593 yards and 8 touchdowns, while Trey Peters recorded 344 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns. The team amassed 801 offensive yards, cementing their place in IHSA history.

Week 1: 69-37 Win

The highly anticipated season opener with Morton had to wait for Mother Nature to clear the air. The game kicked off at 9 p.m., nearly 90 minutes after the scheduled start, to allow for the storms to exit the area. Not known at the time, there was another storm brewing just behind it. That storm was the Bulldog offense, who unloaded video game-like numbers against the visiting Potters.

At the end of the night, the Bulldogs, Lucas Dyer (Senior QB), and Trey Peters (Senior WR) broke school records and etched their names into the IHSA football record books.

The Bulldog offense nearly scored on every possession. They accumulated a total of 801 offensive yards. Of that total, 593 yards were gained in the air and 208 yards on the ground. The air assault was captained by Lucas Dyer, who completed 26 of his 33 passes (79%). Dyer ended with 8 touchdowns on the night.

Dyer’s key target was Trey Peters. Peters caught 11 passes for a total of 344 receiving yards with 5 receiving touchdowns. Gavin Hammerschmidt caught 6 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown. Mason Orton caught 3 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Wade Manuel caught 4 passes for 32 yards. Channing Byers caught one 10-yard pass for a touchdown.

Cade Ashby carried the load on the ground with 19 carries, 77 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Triston Nilson had 5 carries for 73 yards. Dyer had 49 rushing yards.

The epic offensive performance cannot be discussed without giving credit to the O-line. The men in the trenches were a critical piece in this historic night and did not allow a single sack on Dyer.
